Ferrari 512 BB Dinoplex ignition AEC 140 replacement electronic control unit

Among the historic models that best embody the technical and stylistic evolution of the Prancing Horse we find the Ferrari 512 BB, produced between 1976 and 1981. This model had a 12-cylinder 180-degree boxer engine and introduced several technological innovations, including the Magneti Marelli Dinoplex AEC 104 electronic ignition system. The same ignition was used not only on the 512 BB but also on the Ferrari 400 - Ferrari Dino and even on other cars such as the Lamborghini Countach.

The Dinoplex AEC 104 Ignition System

Magneti Marelli has developed over the years a series of innovative ignition systems, among which the Dinoplex AEC 104 is one of the most famous. The Dinoplex system was designed to improve ignition efficiency in high-displacement engines, typical of sports cars in the 70s and 80s. The main feature of the Dinoplex was the ability to provide a powerful spark that ensured more effective ignition of the air-fuel mixture, even at high speeds.

Arriving in the early 2000s it was found that these ignitions could fail and break and we immediately began to use and wire them directly as they broke using the usual original white connector that we are still able to supply today.

Ferrari 512 BB: A Technological Revolution

The Ferrari 512 BB, short for Berlinetta Boxer, represented a turning point in Ferrari production, in fact it introduced the adoption of the Dinoplex AEC 104 ignition system which contributed significantly to the increase in overall performance.

Replacement with American ProtoXide ignitions

This ignition can be replaced identically, as you can see from the photos, in particular, the search for an efficient ignition has led our ignition control unit to improve and add the Multispark function, which allows for the generation of a multi-sequence of sparks to clean the combustion chamber, this new ignition also guarantees greater reliability and promptness of response and acceleration.

These ignitions must restore the original tachometer exactly. It is also possible to purchase an additional module that can correctly calibrate the original tachometer.

Conclusions

The Magneti Marelli Dinoplex AEC 104 electronic ignition system can be replaced both in the event of a fault and by anyone who wishes to preserve the original system which has now become unobtainable for the Ferrari 512 BB. Dinoplex technology continues to live on, with ignitions marketed by ProtoXide where we are technical specialists in installation on these very cars.
